A topical study of Proverbs: Trust in the Lord

Because God is unchanging and will fulfill His promises, He is the only truly trustworthy One. Those who trust in God need never fear that they will be left with nothing. Trusting in the Lord means that we can be confident in our course of action. God promises us that those who trust in Him will be safe (Pr. 18:10; 29:25). This doesn’t necessarily mean physical safety, because evidently bad things happen to people. Those who put their confidence in God can be assured, however, that they will be eternally safe, and their temporal lives will be made infinitely better if their trust is in God and not in themselves (Pr. 3:5; 28:25). Not only will eternal safety be assured, but God promises His wisdom to those who seek Him (Pr. 22:19).
God has a different definition of “safe” than we sometimes do. His definition of safe is so much bigger than mine, because mine is primarily centred around this life. God’s perspective is not limited to the here and now, and promises that our bodies and souls will be protected eternally. There are many worse things that can happen to a person beyond this life. One who puts their trust in the Lord is safe from hell forever, and there is nothing in this life that can compare to that torment. When I am reminded of these things, I can truly agree with the author of Proverbs, who says, “Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord (Pr. 16:20).”
